To an extent it is. Apple is or has started the patent for this. The image is just rendered for a visual representation of what they are doing, and for us to see they are reinventing old tech.

Someone else linked the proper patent on my other reply which does have legs because it’s essentially an iPod with a pairable headset. Which means you could just play tunes off the case like the Apple Watch. Since you kind of always need the case, it makes sense.
I’m guessing Cook is worried about cannibalism with the precious iPhone, and likely watch. The price point would also be an issue, I can’t see AirPod Pros jumping to $700!
