YUNOhost is designed for this. You can do almost everything graphically via the webadmin. Mine has been running for a couple of years and I’m very happy with it. I have email, XMPP (both of which were installed out of the box), a website, file sharing and a few other things. There are a tonne of apps available, including Fediverse instances, Nextcloud. It’s a very cool thing to have available for making self-hosting more accessible.

Tax evasion/fraud. I think they were involved with arms and drugs too but it was the tax that they got nailed for. Spent most of their twenties doing some very hard time.

You’re right and that’s another reason why economic equality is important.
If I get time to find it I’ll post it but there was a famous study where researchers in the UK looked at a smart thermostat and figured out how many privacy disclaimers you would need to agree to to use it lawfully. It was in the hundreds. There was also those photos of kids on the toilet that were taken by an Amazon robotic vacuum cleaner that got leaked. And police getting called out to a murder in the US that was recorded by Alexa.
It’s probably a pacing thing. Having a section of the film where the protagonist has to sit down and learn about threat models, flash a Tails image to a USB stick and fiddle around with PGP keys before they can communicate securely would probably ruin the vibe.
